Churg und Strauss beschrieben erstmals 1951 13 Patienten mit einer systemischen Vaskulitis, die die Lungen, die Nieren, die Haut, die Leber und die peripheren Nerven betraf. Das Churg–Strauss Syndrom ist definiert als die Kombination von Bronchialasthma, Eosinophilie, und einer systemischen nekrotisierenden Vaskulitis der mittleren und kleinen Gefäße ohne Granulome. Entsprechend diagnostische Kriterien wurden vom American College of Rheumatology definiert. Ausgewählt wurden 6 Kriterien: Asthma, Eosinophilie über 10% im Diff. BB, Mononeuropathie (einschl. multiplex) oder Polyneuropathie, Lungeninfiltrate im Röntgenbild, paranasale Sinusabnormalitäten, und eine Biopsie die Blutgefäße mit extravaskulären Eosinophilen enthält. 4 von 6 Kriterien sind gefordert, Sensitivität von 85% und Spezifität von 99.7%.
